Verdict

OFF THE PRESS (7) is desperate to strike. Was well supported at Toowoomba but was on the backfoot early after missing the start. He got home strongly into third but it was all too late. Senior hoop taking over helps as he drops back to a pet trip. Capable of knocking off the shorty. PROPAGANDA (12) is an exciting gelding who has crafted quite the record in his six starts. Perhaps the only knock is his 1200m strength, but he gets a great chance to answer the query third-up. STANISLAUS (2) caused an upset here last month when finding career-best form. Has been kept up to the mark with a tickover trial win 35 days between runs and drops back to a favoured trip. Have to respect. HUON (6) has patchy form but boast peaks that are up to the mark and retains Thompson in the saddle. Not dismissing. TONNEOFGRIT (1) has just missed in his last two and deserves a spot in exotic plays.

Has returned in excellent order with consecutive wins, most recently taking a Class 4 at Gold Coast by two lengths as an odds-on favourite. He also won a BM65 at Toowoomba first-up, kicking strongly after sitting just off the lead. Harder race now, but the profile is progressive and he has winning claims.

Produced another strong run when third in a Class 6 at Toowoomba, beaten just under a length after being slow away and forced wide as the well-supported favourite. His Randwick third two back had merit in a deeper field, and he has now placed in all three runs this campaign. Strong 1200m record makes him the one to beat.

    Verdict
Returns from an eight-month break after two trials since last racing, so there is at least some groundwork for this first-up run. He ended his last preparation with a sixth at this track, beaten just under two lengths as favourite, after a fourth at Eagle Farm in Open grade. Lightly raced and a track-and-trip winner, so he has genuine place appeal.

Led and fought on strongly to win a BM70 at Eagle Farm last start, holding Strada Varenna by a nose at generous odds on soft ground. The run prior was a solid fourth at Gold Coast, beaten a length and a half after being unwanted in the market. The rise in grade and 1200m record temper the winning case.

Returns from a five-week freshening after winning a BM72 at this track, sitting just off the lead and arriving in time to beat Rimbaud by a nose at long odds. He had also placed in a BM70 here two back behind Manpower, so the venue record is hard to fault. Trial since, proven at 1200m and rates a strong winning chance.

Returns from a six-week freshening after finishing last in a Class 6 at Eagle Farm over 1400m, beaten nine lengths with no clear excuse after settling rearward. His Townsville Quality second two back was far better, beaten just over half a length after beginning awkwardly. The 1200m suits, but only a return to his Townsville second puts him into play.

    Verdict
Finished seventh at Toowoomba last start, beaten three and a half lengths after having his chance behind Mean Approach. Two back he was sixth in a BM72 at Rosehill behind Formal at long odds. Those runs do not leap off the page, but he is proven at 1200m, handles wet ground particularly well and brings enough established form to remain a serious contender. Can make his presence felt.

Finished sixth at Toowoomba last start, beaten three and a half lengths after tracking the lead and lacking the dash to make a serious bid. His previous third in a Class 6 at Eagle Farm came on soft ground, but he was beaten six and a half lengths in a small field. Strong overall place numbers and good track stats are positives, though others bring sharper recent form. Looking to others.

Held his form when third in a BM72 at Toowoomba last start, beaten just over a length behind Superalloy after travelling well before laying in late. He had won a BM70 there two back by two lengths, showing a good turn of foot after racing wide. Class rise is the test, but place claims are sound.

Went within a nose at Toowoomba last start despite beginning awkwardly and racing wide, finishing strongly at big odds behind Mean Approach. The run prior was another narrow second in a Class 5 at Sunshine Coast on soft ground after being slow away. The 1200m win record is the query, but he is a genuine place hope.

Had some excuse at Toowoomba last start when held up passing the 200m before finishing eighth, beaten just under four lengths behind Mean Approach. His first run this campaign was a Class 4 fifth at Sunshine Coast where he made solid late ground from well back. Still has to find a stronger finishing edge.

Covered ground when seventh in Open grade at Lismore last start, beaten just under four lengths, after also being bumped near the 1100m. He had been sixth in a BM82 there first-up, knuckling at the start and keeping on from well back. The 1200m record is excellent and the claim helps, but recent output says he has to improve to trouble the better chances. Overlooking.

Was last at Toowoomba last start, beaten over 11 lengths after sitting close enough and offering little when the pressure went on. His previous fifth at this venue was better, but he was still beaten four and a half lengths at long odds behind Gram. Has past wins, but current form is well below what is required.

Battled only fairly when ninth in Open grade at Lismore last start, beaten just over four lengths after beginning only fairly. That followed a plain last in a BM85 at Eagle Farm, where he raced wide throughout and was beaten over 12 lengths at long odds. First-time blinkers and his track-distance record help, but he will have to lift sharply. Can't recommend.
